Gas inserts are designed to allow a homeowner to convert an existing masonry fireplace into an efficient, easy-to-operate gas fireplace.   Gas inserts frequently can be equipped with blowers (fans) that will circulate the heated air into the living space.   Many direct-vent gas inserts can reach efficiencies in the 80%+ range, providing a very effective zone-heating capability.
The downside of a gas insert is that they have a relatively small flame presentation.  Since the gas insert must “fit” into an existing masonry fireplace, the size of the gas firebox (and the glass faceplate) is limited.
