## How Much Heat Does a Fireplace Actually Provide?

[⌊wood stove⌉⌊wood stove⌉[A fireplace or stove can warm anything from one cozy room
to a real share of your home’s heat. The number on the box won’t tell you which.
After 35 years of helping families across Rhode Island and Massachusetts, we’ve
learned that the heat you actually feel comes down to three things working together:

 * **The appliance:** what it’s built to do, and whether it’s the right size.
 * **Your home:** how tight it is and how the heat can move through it.
 * **Your fuel:** especially the firewood, if you burn wood.

That’s why our honest answer to “how much heat will this give me?” always starts
with a few questions about your house. Here’s what we tell customers on the showroom
floor.

## Why the BTU rating is only a starting point

A BTU rating tells you what an appliance can produce under test conditions, not
what your living room will feel like. Many customers ask us whether the manufacturer’s
number is accurate. The honest answer: it’s a useful comparison point, but it’s
far from the whole story.

Here’s what’s behind those numbers:

 * **Wood and pellet stoves:** EPA-certified models are lab-tested for emissions,
and EPA’s database lists a tested heat-output range and efficiency for each one.
Since May 2020, every certified model must show an overall efficiency. ([EPA](https://www.epa.gov/node/34893))
 * **Advertised vs. tested output:** a brochure number is often higher than the
EPA test figure, because the lab uses a smaller test load. One manufacturer says
so plainly in its own FAQ. ([Drolet](https://www.drolet.ca/ca/en/faq/wood-furnaces/))
 * **Gas fireplaces:** the rating plate shows input BTUs, meaning the gas going
in. How much of that reaches your room depends on the unit’s efficiency and your
   setup.
 * **“Heats up to 2,000 sq ft”:** no agency standardizes square-footage claims.
They’re the manufacturer’s best guess for an average house, and your house isn’t
   average.

So treat the BTU number like the horsepower on a car. It tells you something, but
how the car drives depends on the road.

## Your home matters as much as the appliance

The same fireplace can feel like a furnace in one house and barely noticeable in
the next. Two things make the difference.

**How tight is the house?** A well-insulated home with good windows holds onto heat.
A drafty old farmhouse lets it slip away almost as fast as you make it.

**Can the heat move?** An open floor plan lets warm air travel freely. A home that’s
cut up into small rooms and hallways traps heat in the room with the fireplace,
especially with a gas unit.

### A story from Dartmouth

A customer in Dartmouth, Massachusetts bought a gas insert expecting it to heat
his whole home. His house was an older single-story ranch, chopped up into separate
rooms, and the heat simply couldn’t reach the bedrooms. He was disappointed, and
understandably so.

The fix was simple. He didn’t have central air, so a few small fans placed in hallways
and doorways pushed the warm air where it needed to go. His bedrooms finally warmed
up.

### Our tip for cut-up homes

If your home has central heating or air conditioning, set the system’s fan to “On”(
fan only) while the fireplace runs. The blower pulls warm air from the fireplace
room and spreads it through the ductwork. No ducts? Small fans in doorways and hallways
do the same job on a smaller scale.

## With wood, the fuel decides the heat

The most common reason a wood stove disappoints is wet wood. Most firewood sold
as “seasoned” isn’t.

We know this firsthand. We buy plenty of firewood to burn in our own showrooms,
and even buying in volume, we can’t get truly seasoned wood from our suppliers.
If a hearth dealer can’t, a homeowner buying a cord off a truck usually can’t either.

**The fix:** buy your wood early, split it, and stack it outside off the ground
for a year or more before you burn it.

### How to tell if your wood is ready󠀁[](https://hearthsidepatio.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/stihl-wood-moisture-gauge-scaled-1.jpg)󠁿

A moisture meter is the best $25 a wood burner can spend. Use the kind with two
metal prongs:

 1. Split a log and push the prongs into the freshly split face. The ends dry first,
so testing the end can fool you.
 2. Look for a reading **under 17%**. That’s our Hearthside standard, a little stricter
than the EPA’s guideline of 20% or less. ([EPA](https://www.epa.gov/node/93297))

### What wet wood does to your stove

Wet wood burns cold. Its energy goes into boiling off water instead of heating your
home. You’ll notice:

 * The stove is hard to light and hard to keep going.
 * The glass turns black with soot.
 * Smoke pours out every time you open the door.
 * Creosote builds up in the chimney, which raises the risk of a chimney fire.

### A story from Little Compton

A customer in Little Compton replaced her old Vermont Castings Encore with a new
Vermont Castings Intrepid. The Encore came from an era when stoves were looser and
more forgiving. The Intrepid is smaller and built to today’s cleaner-burning EPA
standards, which makes it more sensitive to draft and wood quality.

She struggled with it. Her wood wasn’t fully seasoned, and a recent renovation had
added insulation, making the house tighter and changing how the chimney drafted.

Our team visited her home with properly seasoned wood. We showed her how to crack
a window during startup so the stove could heat up and start drafting. She bought
a cord of kiln-dried wood to burn that first winter while her own stack finished
seasoning, and the stove has performed well since.

**If you’re upgrading from an older stove,** expect a learning curve. Today’s stoves
burn cleaner and use less wood, but they ask more of your firewood. Kiln-dried wood
is a smart bridge for the first year.

## Match the appliance to what you want from it

There’s no single best fireplace, only the right one for how you live. Here’s how
we guide families:

      | If you want… | We usually recommend | Why |
 | Ease of use | Gas fireplace or insert | Flip a switch or use the remote. No wood to haul, no ashes. |
 | Ambiance | Wood stove or insert | Nothing replaces the crackle, smell and glow of a real wood fire. |
 | To offset oil or electric heat, even while you’re at work | Pellet stove or insert | A built-in thermostat holds the room temperature on its own. |

**Wood vs. pellet for saving money.** Both are fine supplemental heat for homes
that heat with oil or electric. In our experience, families typically save 30–40%
on heating costs, and more when oil prices are high.

The key difference is control. A pellet stove’s digital thermostat keeps the room
at the temperature you set. A wood stove depends on you to adjust the air and add
wood, so room temperature is harder to regulate. That’s the trade-off for a real
wood fire.

### Bigger isn’t better: sizing is personal

Square footage alone can’t size a stove. A tightly insulated house might need a
small stove, while a drafty house of the same size needs a larger one.

An oversized wood stove makes things worse, not better. You end up turning it down
to keep the room comfortable, and a choked-down fire burns dirty and builds creosote.
That’s why our team asks about your insulation, windows, layout and how you plan
to use the stove before recommending a size.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is the manufacturer’s BTU rating accurate?** It’s a fair comparison point between
models, but it’s measured in a lab, not your living room. Advertised numbers often
run higher than EPA test figures. Square-footage claims aren’t standardized by anyone.

**Can a fireplace heat my whole house?** Sometimes, in a tight home with an open
layout. In a home with many small rooms, expect it to heat the main living area
well, and use your HVAC fan or small fans to move heat further.

**How dry should firewood be?** Under 17% moisture by our standard (the EPA says
20% or less). Test a freshly split face with a two-prong moisture meter.

**How long does firewood need to season?** A year or more, split and stacked outside
off the ground. Don’t count on wood sold as “seasoned” being ready to burn.

**What size stove do I need?** It depends on your insulation, windows and layout
as much as square footage. Two houses of the same size can need very different stoves.

## Tips on What to Do With Your Fireplace in Summer

- Link: https://hearthsidepatio.com/hearth/tips-on-what-to-do-with-your-fireplace-in-summer/

When it’s hot outside, you want to be inside. With a hearthside fireplace in your
house, you may wonder how to take advantage of this unused asset. During the summer
months, when fireplaces are usually not in use, it can feel like a waste of space.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to decorate your fireplace and make
it into something even more beautiful than ever before. Here are some ideas for
how to use your fireplace all year round.

## Create a Fireplace Table

If your fireplace is in the living room, it’s a great place to create a small table.
You can use any piece of wood as a tabletop and attach it to the fireplace using
hardware. If you don’t have any extra wood lying around your house, cut out a piece
of heavy cardboard for the tabletop and cover it with fabric or paper that matches
your room’s decor.

Suddenly you will have a space where you can host guests for a game night or allow
your kids to play while you try to get work done during summer vacation. The point
is an extra table in your home, even a small one, can have a lot of uses.

## Turn it into a Planter

If you’re looking to create a beautiful space that complements your fireplace, consider
turning it into a planter. You’ll need to find something large enough to hold the
plants you want (a large planter will be ideal), but once that’s done, all you have
to do is get creative with the types of plants you choose.

If you want something small, try putting in three different types of succulents
or cacti. If you prefer something bigger, try using 12 different kinds of herbs
with varying heights and colors—or even add some flowers for some extra color. The
possibilities are endless when it comes to creating the perfect summertime garden.

There are many low-light options, or you can install a growing light and have fresh
veggies ready to harvest before it is time to reignite your hearthside fireplace.

## Create a Pet Hideout

If you have a pet that likes to cuddle with you, consider making your fireplace
into a hideout for them. You can do so by installing an opening in the stone or
brick wall of the fireplace. This way, when its summertime and too hot outside,
your pet can still get someplace cool from which they can watch their favorite activities.

Be sure to use a pet-safe product when installing this opening so that it won’t
harm your furry friend if they happen to chew on it or lick it.

## Clean the Fireplace

This is the time to clean your fireplace and make sure it’s ready to go for winter.
Having a professional chimney sweep company come and detail your hearthside fireplace
is an excellent way to ensure an efficient burning apparatus come the colder months.
This also helps avoid any accidental chimney fires or possible dangers to your home.

## Decorate with Holidays & Life Events

If you’re celebrating a birthday or anniversary, use the fireplace as the focal
point of an extravagant dinner party! You can put up some decorative lights above
and around your fireplace that look really pretty at night. This will make it even
more romantic when you’re spending time with your significant other.

## Upgrade Your Hearthside Fireplace

If you’re a homeowner, it’s likely that your fireplace is one of the most important
features in your house. After all, it’s not just a functional space that adds warmth
to your home; it’s also an attractive focal point that can set the mood of any room.

When summer rolls around, you may be tempted to close off this source of comfort
and style. So before you decide whether or not to close off what could be a fantastic
part of your home for another season (or more), take these tips into consideration.

## Outdoor Fireplaces to Keep You Warm No Matter the Season

No matter the time of year, being able to snuggle up with the ones you love around
a relaxing fireplace is always welcome. Adding that same luxurious ambiance to an
outdoor area is another way to improve your property so you can enjoy the fresh
air while staying warm and cozy. It makes summer last a bit longer and winter easier
to manage. There are a few things to keep in mind when selecting your [outdoor fireplaces.](https://hearthsidepatio.com/product-type/outdoor-living/)

### Consider the Materials

The construction of outdoor fireplaces can be made from stone, brick, or metal.
Stone and brick are the most common materials for an outdoor fireplace. They both
have a long lifespan and are low-maintenance when it comes to cleaning. However,
they do require some upkeep if you want to keep them looking their best.

Metal is another option, but it is less common than stone or brick because it tends
not to last as long as either of those options would under similar conditions. There
are times when metal works very well outdoors, like in an outdoor fire pit where
the surface area that needs protection is much smaller than something like an entire
patio area with multiple seating arrangements. The most popular are stone and brick
because of the classic appearance and almost living room-styled area you get in
your outdoor space.

### Know Your City Ordinances

It’s important to note that some cities may require a permit to install an outdoor
fireplace. Additionally, you may need to pay fees and/or file paperwork with the
city or county to get your fire pit up and running. Depending on where you live,
there may also be additional requirements such as inspections or certifications
before they can make their way onto your property.

Most of the time, a quick check at your local town website will be enough to ensure
you are good to install and enjoy a beautiful outdoor fireplace.

### Why Should You Install Outdoor Fireplaces?

Outdoor fireplaces are great for entertaining. They allow you to have your friends
and family over without worrying about the weather. If you live in a cold climate,
then an outdoor fireplace can be a fun way for everyone to enjoy themselves on those
chilly nights.

Outdoor fireplaces are perfect for keeping warm on cool evenings. Even if it isn’t
too cold outside, having an open flame nearby will still make the air more comfortable.
You can also cook over an open flame or roast marshmallows while relaxing under
the stars.

You can also help create an atmosphere where people want to spend time together
instead of just sitting around watching TV. An outdoor fireplace cultivates a space
where you want to talk and share stories while staying cozy and watching the flames
dance.

Everyone has seen the comfortable Instagram photos and videos of perfectly laid
out fireplace accessories framing a cozy evening indoors while the snow comes down
outside. These images paint our imaginations with desirable family activities that
are a lot easier to attain than we think. Having a quality set of accessories for
maintaining and enhancing your fireplace elevates your in-home experience.

While you review our list of different [patio and hearth accessories](https://hearthsidepatio.com/)
for your fireplace, keep in mind the general size and shape of your setting. Stick
to those accessories that amplify your atmosphere and do not get in the way while
people are trying to walk around your fireplace.

## Fireplace Screens and Spark Guards

Safety is always a primary concern with any fireplace. A well-made spark guard is
the perfect fireplace accessory to protect your kiddos and pets whenever they are
playing a little too close to the fire. In addition, these essential items keep
embers from jumping outside of the fireplace structure and onto nearby carpeting,
rugs, paper materials, or skin. The longer you can ensure the safety of your home
and guests, the more you will get to enjoy your fireplace for years to come.

## Fireplace Tool Sets

A traditional toolset of fireplace accessories includes four essential pieces –
a poker (stoker), tongs, broom, and shovel (pan), all of which can be hung or secured
on a convenient stand. Most of these tools come in heat resistance metal materials
that are easy to keep clean, so the practical and aesthetic value of the tools never
goes away.

Another key fireplace tool to get when you are considering different patio and hearth
accessories is a log holder. If you are operating a wood fireplace, you need a reliable
source of fuel nearby so you can maintain the heat and flame levels. Even if you
use a gas or oil fireplace, having a stationary log holder adds to the overall ambiance
of your fireplace setting. That is why you see many people with bellows hung on
their walls even if they have no practical use with modern fireplace models.

## Patio and Hearth Accessories

If you are going to have an outdoor fireplace set, try to pick up a quality fireproof
rug. They ensure you get a refined look to your fireplace without risking danger
because of fire-resistant materials. They also add a bit of comfort to the whole
experience you are going for, especially if you add an andiron to your fireplace.
That is the metal structure that holds firewood aloft to improve airflow. Again,
even if you use an oil or gas fireplace, you will likely see an andiron inside the
structure to give the impression of a traditional wood-powered fireplace.

## Advantages of Pellet Stoves In Winter

The winter season can be quite stressful, especially when you don’t have an excellent
heating solution. While there are many options to choose from, it helps make the
right choice that can help you cut down your heating bill costs. That’s why you
need to consider the Harman pellet stove to help you keep warm during the cold season.
Unlike traditional wood stoves, pellet stoves are much more efficient and easier
to install. So why not head up to fireplace stores in MA and get one today?

In this article, we’ll discuss the advantages of using the Harman pellet stove to
help you make the right decision:

**Efficiency **

Efficiency is one key advantage of using the [Harman pellet stove](https://hearthsidepatio.com/product-type/hearth/stoves/pellet-stoves/).
Burning high-quality wood pellets releases less ash and soot than cordwood, making
home cleaning and maintenance effortless. Besides, cordwood fireplaces waste a lot
of heat that escapes through the chimney.

So if you want to save on your heating bills while making your home energy efficient,
you should consider using a pellet stove.

**It’s easy to install **

Pellet stoves from [fireplace stores in MA](https://hearthsidepatio.com/) are easy
to install, saving you the time for other essential things. You can directly vent
a Harman pellet stove without the need for vertical exhaust piping. While you may
need to do some drilling, it requires little effort, unlike the wood fireplaces,
which require top-of-the-roof exhaust pipes.

That means you must put in some work and money to install the wood fireplaces. For
pellet stoves—it’s much simpler as you can install them in your basement, without
worrying about other extra installations—in the name of above the roof venting pipes.

**It takes up less space **

Another huge advantage of using a Harman pellet stove is that it occupies less space.
These stoves come in ideal sizes, which means they don’t eat up much space compared
to wood fireplaces or furnaces. For instance, installing it in the corner of your
room will get closer to a rear wall, sidewall, and rear corners by a few inches.

**It features temperature control settings **

The ability to adjust the temperature using the Harman pellet stove’s temperature
control settings to suit your surroundings makes this stove an excellent choice
for many homeowners. It ensures that your home receives the right amount of heat
while enabling you to save fuel. You cannot achieve this when using wood fireplaces
unless you want to sit there and monitor the firewood to ensure it doesn’t get too
hot or go out. Depending on your mood, you might let it burn because you don’t have
the choice.

The winter season requires a sure-fire home heating solution if you want to survive
the cold weather. That’s why you should consider heading out to the [fireplace store in MA & RI](https://hearthsidepatio.com/about-us/locations/)
to get the Harman pellet stove. It’s easy to install, energy-efficient, and more,
making it a top priority for any homeowner during the cold season. Get one today
and say goodbye to the cold weather and huge heating bills!

## Boost your fireplace’s efficiency with a gas insert (part 1)

Does your home have a masonry built, open-burning wood fireplaces? If so, you may
wonder if you can improve the efficiency of your fireplace with a new insert. The
answer is yes!

An insert is a great upgrade that will transform your wood fireplace into a beautiful
heat producer. Here’s how. Masonry built wood fireplaces can exhaust as much as
24,000 cubic feet of air per hour to the outside, which in turn draws in cold air
in through the home’s doors and windows. Because they are only -15 to +15 percent
efficient, they are considered highly inefficient.

A fireplace insert fits directly into your existing fireplace, greatly enhancing
its performance and beauty. There are three types of fireplace inserts – available
in multiple designs and fuel types – each with distinct benefits.

**Gas Fireplace Inserts**
Operated by the flip of a switch or remote control, gas
fireplace inserts burn natural gas or liquid propane, offering the greatest level
of convenience. There’s no ash to clean up or need to feed the fire with wood. When
used as zone heaters, direct vent gas fireplace inserts can pay for themselves in
a matter of a few years.

_Heat & Glo Escape 35FB Gas Insert_

**Wood Fireplace Inserts**

If you don’t want to part with the crackle and aroma of burning wood (understandably
so), EPA-certified wood fireplace inserts are a smart choice. Because they have
advanced combustion technologies, they’re among the most efficient wood-burning
options available. Some units can heat for more than 10 hours on a single load of
quality wood, while expelling minimal pollutants into the environment. And because
they burn so completely, you’ll have minimal ash to clean up.
**Pellet Fireplace
Inserts**

Pellet inserts are powerful heat sources if you’re tired of paying top dollar for
heating with fossil fuels like fuel oil and propane. With state-of-the-art technologies,
many have programmable thermostats that will adjust heat output to your liking.
Pellet inserts produce very little ash to clean up and some units even have automatic
cleaning cycles. Heating with pellets is a green choice, as pellets are a renewable
and made from byproducts like sawdust and wood chips.

## Why heat with a wood stove this winter?

⌊Wood burner⌉⌊Wood burner⌉With winter barreling down our sights here in New England,
many of us are looking for practical alternative heating options for their homes.
We take a look at three reasons why it pays – comfort-wise and money-wise –  to
consider the beauty and efficiency of a wood stove.

### 1. Self-Sufficiency

Relying on a gas or power company to fuel the furnace or boiler is how many of us
heat our homes. But in the event of a power outage or gas line break, you could
very well be left in the cold. That’s where a wood stove can save the day, keeping
your home warm and giving you a place to cook a meal, even when the other appliances
are out. With a wood stove, you will still be able to stay warm and enjoy the light
of the fire.

If you’ve decided to live “off the grid”, you’ll also enjoy significant savings
from generating your own heat from trees harvested on your property and [seasoned for perfect burning](https://www.thisoldhouse.com/ideas/firewood-101).
A cord of properly seasoned hardwood produces heat that is equivalent to about 130
gallons of fuel oil. Wood is a renewable resource, and trees sourced from your region
can support your local economy.

### 2. Cost savings

⌊heritage⌉⌊heritage⌉By not relying solely on your furnace, you can save money on
the repairs and ongoing maintenance typically required during the winter months.
With proper routine care and preventive maintenance, you may never have to replace
your wood stove while the lifespan of a current model furnace is at best 30 years.
A wood stove will be your steady companion for years.

Because heat rises, a wood stove on the main floor of your house will also help
heat a second floor. Locating the stove in the area where you spend the most time
can help cut fuel consumption by up to 25 percent.

### 3. Comfort you can feel

Many people who use [wood stoves](https://hearthsidepatio.com/product-type/hearth/stoves/wood-stoves/)
as the primary heat source in their homes report that the heat they feel from their
wood stove is more comfortable than heat that comes from a furnace or boiler. The
main reason for this has to do with the way that furnaces work versus how a wood
stove works. Furnaces rely on forced heat that ‘pushes’ the air through your home.
The problem with forced heat, however, is that it creates pockets of heat in spaces
that are better ventilated and leaves freezing cold spots in other areas of your
home.

A wood stove produces a more consistent  ‘radiant’ heat that warms the air throughout
the home.  No more cold spots and lots more comfort, according to the many folks
who use wood stoves. We couldn’t agree more.

2. Prep the grill3. Time it right!

expert in the country, will practically guarantee your success. So grab a cold one,

### PREPARING THE TURKEY

 * [Pick out a great turkey](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/burning-questions/how-to-pick-a-turkey-for-your-thanksgiving-dinner/weber-30308.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)!
 * [Make sure the turkey fits!](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/burning-questions/what-size-turkey-will-fit-in-my-grill/weber-30312.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
 * [Brining](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/tips-techniques/to-brine-or-not-to-brine/weber-30684.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
is a great way to add weight and moisture!
 * Add [flavor](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/tips-techniques/top-10-ways-to-add-flavor-to-your-turkey/weber-30304.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)!
 * [Truss](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/tips-techniques/how-to-truss-and-spit-poultry-for-the-rotisserie/weber-30479.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
 * Cover the top of the turkey with a [cheesecloth](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/tips-techniques/how-to-use-a-cheesecloth-on-your-turkey/weber-30264.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving).
You will leave this on for the first 2-3 hours.

### PREPARING THE GRILL

 * When using a gas grill you will want to use wood chips. We like to use 2 handfuls
   of [cherry](https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/cooking/smoking-woods-and-planks/17140.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
   and 1 handful of [hickory](https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/cooking/smoking-woods-and-planks/17143.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving).
Soak the wood chips in water or beer before you use them for anywhere from 30
minutes to 2 hours. You can put the wood chips in a [smoker box](https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/cooking/smoking-woods-and-planks/7576.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
or in a built in smoker box if your grill has one.
 * Put a [drip pan](https://www.weber.com/US/en/accessories/care/drip-pans/6416.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving)
on the flavorizer bars with 2-3 liters of water under where the turkey will go.
If you plan on using the drippings in a gravy then only use 1 liter of water.
 * Set-up the grill for [indirect heat](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/behind-the-grill/how-to-grill-indirect-on-your-gas-grill/weber-47750.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving),
meaning that the turkey will not be directly over a lit burner. Preheat your
grill for 10-15 minutes before adding your turkey.  Get our temperature and pound
   guide [here](https://www.weber.com/US/en/blog/burning-questions/how-many-minutes-per-pound-will-my-turkey-take/weber-30306.html?utm_source=How%20to%20Cook%20A%20Turkey%20On%20Your%20Gas%20Grill&utm_medium=Blog&utm_campaign=Blog%20-%20Thanksgiving).
 * If it is going to be cold where you live, then the turkey will take few extra
   minutes per pound to cook.

### TIME

 * Check the temperature of the turkey halfway through the cook, three quarters
of the way and then when you think it is done to make sure that you are on the
right track to hit 165. This will help you monitor the turkey and make sure it
   is not over cooked!
 * The more you open the lid, the longer it will take to cook so be patient, relax
and go watch some more football.

### WHEN IS IT DONE?

 * Keep in the mind that the turkey could cook a little quicker than you expect
so be sure to have checked it halfway, three quarters of the way and then when
   you think it is done.
 * Check the temperature of the turkey on the innermost part of the thigh and the
thickest part of the breast to make sure that it is fully cooked at 165 degrees
   before removing it.
 * This step is important! Let it rest for 20-30% of the total cooking time. You
can loosely cover the turkey with a piece of aluminum foil while it is resting
or you can just leave it uncovered.
