What a gorgeous day to get your kids outside to play!

Quality outdoor play is essential for a child to develop motor skills and so much more. Playing outside gives kids a break from learning and allows them to fully express their imagination. There are five core benefits kids get from playing outdoors.

#1 – DEVELOPMENT OF FINE AND GROSS MOTOR SKILLS
The growth of a child’s fine and gross motor skills come with time and increased activity. Between the ages of eight and 12 months old, kids begin to show signs of fine and gross motor skill development. It’s our job as adults to help them refine those skills as they get older through sensory-based activities. And an obvious sensory space is an outdoor play area. Sensory skills are built by such activities as grabbing and holding onto things. Climbing is another great way to build skills. A rope swing or climbing wall built for kids’ size are perfect and easy add-ons to your outdoor area.

#2 – LESS SCREEN TIME
By now, the science is showing us that too much screen time can negatively impact such things as a child’s eyesight due to the close distance between their eyes and the screen. A different study by the American Academy of Ophthalmology showed that playing outside will actually improve a child’s eyesight by 2% for every hour spent outside, and may curve early signs of myopia (nearsightedness).

#3 – OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMAGINATION AND ENERGY RELEASE
Children have wonderful, wild imaginations and loads of abundant energy. The outdoors offer unlimited possibilities for kids to be creative. Watch how kids invent stories and create games when left to their own imaginations. If you have an outdoor playset or play house, those monkey bars could be the hero escaping over a river. A play telescope and steering wheel might become a sailing pirate ship or wildlife explorer’s boat.

#4 – ASSOCIATING JOY WITH THE OUTDOORS
Sports are a great way to introduce new games, new motor skills, new ways of socializing and teamwork, and just plain fun. All you need is a basket of balls or rackets at the ready for kids to get inspired to run, jump, shoot, pass, and play catch with one another.
A little planning on your part can make a child anticipate fun when they step outdoors - which means theyll look forward to getting out more and letting their energy and imaginations soar.

#5 – GETTING SOCIAL IN REAL LIFE
Socialization in real life with real people in real time is one of the best things for kids (and all of us)! Talking, laughing, sharing, and playing with other kids in the great outdoors - whether you’re in a city playground, or a rural backyard - provides engagement, restoration, and brain-building joy and connection to kids of all ages.

So let’s make play a priority as spring tiptoes around the corner and we start to feel the warm sun again on our faces!

And if you’re looking for a new playset or addition to an existing playscape, be sure to get in touch SOON so your home is on the calendar for our Hearthside outdoor service and installation team!
